How to Accessorize for Spring 2022

Spring 2022 is all about Y2K fashion paired with traditional and sophisticated looks, especially when it comes to accessories. We’re seeing everything from traditional accessories with a modern twist, like pearls and gold hoops, to chic and fun options, like purple purses and flower-shaped eyewear. Let’s take a look at how to accessorize for spring 2022 to stay modern and chic while also keeping a timeless and sustainable wardrobe. 

Purple purses

I am all for a statement bag. While I am a huge proponent of a neutral go-to bag I can use regularly, I also love having a couple of statement purses that easily add a little pizazz and color to a neutral or simple outfit. For spring 2022, we are seeing purple purses all over the runway, and I am here for this fun look. Purple isn’t found frequently in streetwear, so adding a pop of purple is eye-catching without being flashy. Jewel tones like amethyst purple are particularly trendy for spring 2022, but a pastel purple is a timeless tone that can be a staple in your spring and summer closet for years to come.

Purple purses are perfect when paired with gray, black, and white ensembles that are begging for a little color and life. If you’re trying to pair purple with a colorful outfit, it’s easiest to match the purple with similar tones like pinks and blues. But, if you’re feeling bold, purple also can look stunning when color-blocked with yellow, orange, and bright green.

Green accessories

Don’t love purple? Try out green! Green is the color for spring 2022 accessories, inspired by the natural world around us with a hint of the Y2K vibe that’s permeating 2022 fashion. We love that green is entering the fashion world so strongly right now, mirroring the worldwide push towards greater sustainability in fashion.

If you love trying out new colors, green is definitely a fun one for spring 2022. There are endless options to choose from. Whether you want to incorporate neon green, lime green, olive green, or emerald green, and whether you want to wear green sunglasses, green shoes, green earrings, or green everything, there is a lot of flexibility to play around with this color in your spring aesthetic.

That’s why I’m so excited that pearl jewelry is as trendy for spring 2022 as it is timeless! We’re seeing a lot of pearls in hair clips and on anklets this season, but you can never go wrong with a classic pearl necklace or teardrop pearl earrings. Go as traditional and ornate as you like or opt for something modern and fresh. As long as you love them, your pearl accessories will become a staple in your wardrobe for seasons to come.

Statement gold hoops

Gold hoops are another must-have accessory that go with just about any outfit and any time of year, regardless of what’s hot and trendy. Like pearls, gold hoops are traditionally timeless but also trending for spring 2022. This season, statement hoops are in, transitioning from the more classic gold hoops into more intricate statement pieces. We’re seeing a lot of embellishments, chains, and gems added to gold hoops to create a unique and contemporary vibe to this classic piece. I love that you can find a vintage designer gold hoop that speaks to your soul, and it’ll be just as trendy now as it was when it was first released.

Layered double chain necklaces 

When looking at how to accessorize for spring 2022, look no further than double-layered chain necklaces. Now we’re seeing several chains layered on top of one another to create a chic look with this traditional piece. Varying and layering length chains adds dimension, particularly when paired with plunging necklines or neutral blouses. Chain belts

The 2000s chain belts, like layered chain necklaces, have returned full force for spring 2022. This isn’t a look for everyone, but Olivia Rodrigo and Chanel have both been rocking this style, so it’s gained a lot of popularity in fashion-forward crowds. If you’ve been holding on to a chain belt from the early 2000s, now is the time to break it out. But we wouldn’t recommend going out and buying one unless it’s part of your personal style, since this trend will likely be out by next year.

Headscarfs

Headscarves and bandanas give off Italian vacation vibes, and I am all for it. Headscarves make their way on and off the runways every few seasons, but they always look refined and elegant in streetwear. One of my favorite spring outfit ideas is a Grace Kelly vibe, with a head bandana wrapped around your hair and tied at the nape of your neck. This aesthetic is effortlessly beautiful and creates an alluring, graceful silhouette that will draw attention to your face and hair.

Find a headscarf in whatever color, pattern, and designer you love. I recommend choosing a neutral style that you can pair with lots of outfits, so you can wear it for years to come beyond the spring 2022 trends. (I also recommend matching your headscarf to your eyes, because a tonal match can really make your eyes pop!)  

Large jewels

We’re seeing a lot of oversized jewels hit high-fashion and streetwear, reminiscent of attending the opera, going to a ball with the Bridgertons, or dressing up with pieces from your grandmother’s jewelry box. These larger-than-life jewels like gorgeous emeralds, bursting rubies, and vibrant amethyst are stunning statements to add to your spring outfits. You can never go wrong with jewels, particularly if it’s a jewel you feel a close connection to. Make sure any jewel statement piece you buy matches with other items in your jewelry box and the common colors in your wardrobe, so you’ll easily be able to re-wear your trendy jewels long into the future.

Clogs

Clogs aren’t for everyone, but I find them particularly comfy and cute. If you’re shorter, clogs are a great way to add a little height and lengthen your legs without subjecting your feet to heels regularly. Leather clogs (or faux leather, to be more sustainable) are particularly trendy for spring 2022, but they’re also an easy look that you can wear in the fall with jeans, corduroy skirts, and other cozy autumn looks. We’re seeing a lot of backless heeled clogs as well as slingback clogs this season, but if you’re most comfortable in clogs with a back (so your feet don’t slip out), those are an ageless option as well.

Fun sunglasses

This is one of my favorite trends that’s come back from the Y2K fashion era… fun sunglasses and goofy eyewear! We’re seeing a lot of oversized, unique shapes with colorful frames and lenses hit the scene, and they’re so fun for summer. Although this might not be the most timeless look, I’m also a believer that adding a little brightness to your wardrobe is just as important as ageless vibes. So, don’t be afraid to play around with different styles and colors when it comes to your eyewear—the right pair of shades can completely transform your outfit!

What not to wear for spring 2022: chunky platform heels

Chunky platform heels are the “what not to wear” in spring 2022. We’re seeing a push towards ‘60s and ‘70s platforms with a Y2K twist, like large boots (ankle-high or over the knee) with chunky platform heels. While these go-go style boots can be super chic and fashion-forward, they’re not timeless or very practical, so we’re giving this spring 2022 a hard pass.
